Before I go into this review full force…YOU. MUST. READ. THIS. BOOK.  There, I feel so much better.

I’m not going to lie and say that I haven’t been in a reading slump because I have. I’ve read some good books since the start of the year but very few have stayed with me. After a while, when you read romance they can seem all the same without any uniqueness to them. Well written and well thought-out books can be difficult to find and sometimes even go unnoticed, which is mind-boggling. I’ve been on the hunt for a story that’s different but yet I wanted this book to have everything I dream about; complexity, a profound love story, deep in meaning, rich in characters and unpredictable. Truthfully, I was beyond determined to find the book I was destined to read. I was on a mission to find that book that would make me stalk the author and be forever indebted to her for writing an amazing story. I was on a mission to find that book that would sit proudly on my favorite’s shelf along others I adored. Mission accomplished: I found it!!!

I felt broken too, but nobody could tell.

The unlikely friendship that is forged between Wilson and Blue is incredibly heartwarming. Amy Harmon takes her time in building that relationship and nothing about it is overt, yet it’s there because you can feel it through her words.

“The beauty of that poem is that everybody can relate, because we all feel like nobody. We all feel like we are on the outside, looking in. We all feel scattered. But I think it’s that self-awareness that actually makes us somebody. And you are definitely somebody, Blue. You may not be a work of art, but you are definitely a piece of work.”

Blue is the heroine I felt an immediate connection to and there was nothing about her that I didn’t love.  She’s admirable, she’s resilient and she’s beautiful from the inside and out.  I’m not sure that I’ve ever felt this strongly about a heroine before but it’s a wonderful feeling.  What can I say about Wilson?  Who doesn’t love an Englishman who is kind, thoughtful, supportive and beyond intelligent? Neither Blue nor Wilson are perfect but they made sense together and their journey together will squeeze your heart like a vise.

“God? I’m ugly inside.  And it’s not my fault.  You know it’s not.  I’ll take responsibility for some of it, but you’ve gotta own up to your part, too.  Nobody saved me.  Nobody gave a shit.  Nobody came to my rescue.” I gulped, feeling sorrow in my throat, making it hurt to swallow, but it was pain I’d been swallowing for a long time and I forced it down.  “So I’m asking you. Can you take it away? Can you take away the ugliness?”

A Different Blue is a slow building, character driven and powerful story that will move you from the start because it’s filled with such heartache and beauty that it’s poetic. The writing is absolutely breathtaking and I found myself highlighting passages because the words were insanely beautiful and thought-provoking. I’m at a loss for words because my review doesn’t do this book justice at all. I wish I knew words beautiful enough to describe all the feelings and thoughts I have about this story.

“Once upon a time there was a little blackbird, pushed from the nest, unwanted.  Discarded.  Then a Hawk found her and swooped her up and carried her away, giving her a home in his nest, teaching her to fly.  But one day the Hawk didn’t come home and the little bird was alone again, unwanted. She wanted to fly away.”
