I’m not even sure where to start with this review because I seem to be at loss for words. Seduced in the Dark is much more intense, darker, titillating and beyond twisted than the first book. I’m truly at a loss to express what I feel about this story but let’s get one thing straight right away…I loved this book just as much as Captive in the Dark. It has everything a good book needs; action, suspense, believable characters and a healthy or unhealthy dose of intimacy but that depends on how you look at it. I prefer to see the glass half-full!
I needed a few days to process this book and to get a handle on my emotions because this is the kind of story that will stay with you. I didn’t want the story of Olivia and Caleb to end. Their harrowing experiences apart and together touched me in a way I didn’t think possible. When you see a book labeled erotic romance, you don’t necessarily think a profound story is about to unfold or at least that’s what I thought. I was so wrong and I’m beyond grateful that this series was recommended to me because I love everything about the Dark Duet.
Surprisingly enough, Seduced in the Dark taught me a few things about the human spirit. There are moments throughout our existence when we doubt our strength or perhaps we even doubt that we can be selfless human beings. It’s when we are trapped underneath all our brokenness that we surprise ourselves and realize there’s more to us than our painful past or the revelation of devastating secrets. This is that story. This story continues to be one of hope and beauty.
“I’ve been doing this a long time- manipulating people to get my way. That’s why you think you love me. Because I’ve broken you down and built you back up to believe it. It wasn’t an accident. Once you leave this behind….. you’ll see that.”
CJ Roberts is a brilliant writer, simply for the fact that she took someone like Caleb and made me fall in love with him. The gradual revelation about Caleb’s past is slow and torturous because I wanted to desperately understand what was at his core. I wanted to understand the “why” behind his actions. If there is anyone that is a product of his environment, it’s Caleb. Once I learned the “why” my heart broke. To say that he is beyond broken over the discovery is an understatement. The ever-present inner turmoil that Caleb feels through the entire book left me exhausted because you simply want him to find peace. And if I loved Olivia for the gal she was in the first book, I loved her even more for the woman she became in book two. She’s equally as broken as Caleb but she’s resilient and fierce but above all, she never loses her hope.
“I love you, Caleb. I love you! If you care for me at all… please, don’t do this! Please, don’t leave me. I don’t know how to live without you. Don’t make me go back to trying to be someone I don’t know how to be anymore.”
These are the most emotionally scarred characters that anyone can possible encounter. They are either scarred by others and sadly, sometimes by each other. But fear not, this story will move you and it will challenge you to see that love comes in all different forms whether you think it’s healthy or not. Yes, this is a story about redemption, survival, hope and the power of love.
My final two cents: It’s darker and more disturbing than the first book but I promise you that you’ll find the beauty that lies within pages of Seduced in the Dark.
