The Secret of Ella and Micha by Jessica Sorensen

The Secret of Ella and Micha (The Secret, #1)

Ella and Micha have been best friends since they were kids. But one tragic night shatters their friendship and their lives forever.

Ella used to be a rule-breaker with fiery attitude who wore her heart on her sleeve. But she left everything behind when she went to college and transformed into someone that follows the rules, keeps everything together, and hides all her problems. But now it’s summer break and she has nowhere else to go but home.

Ella fears everything she worked so hard to bury might resurface, especially with Micha living right next door. If Micha tries to tempt the old her back, she knows that it will be hard to resist.

Micha is sexy, smart, confident, and can get under Ella’s skin like no one else can. He knows everything about her, including her darkest secrets. And he’s determined to bring his best friend, and the girl he loves back, no matter what it takes.

This book has a little bit of everything, angst, heartbreak, loss, friendship and romance.  It’s a story about a childhood friendship that changes and grows into something much more than either Ella or Micha expected.

One of the many things I enjoyed about the books was Ella.  She’s one bad-ass heroine who doesn’t take any crap and I love her for that!  I love that she’s sexy, a tomboy AND she knew about cars! I can’t change a tire to save my life!!! And even though she tries desperately to change who she is, the real her starts to resurface (thank goodness).

Ella’s relationship with Micha is so special that I couldn’t help but root for them to make it as a couple despite their tough upbringing and the ugliness that plagues their life.  There are moments that I thought were so sweet that I got a little choked-up, especially when Micha tries to get Ella away from the bridge.  That was heart breaking and I loved every minute of it.  Micha is rough and tough (or so he seems because he’s really not) but he’s also a musician who cares for Ella so deeply that he’s willing to sacrifice his dream for her. *sigh* Yep, he’s totally dreamy!  The supporting characters, Ethan and Lila are equally as awesome.  Lila is a total princess who meets Mr. Grease Monkey himself.  A beautiful supporting couple indeed!!!

The book moves at a good pace but two topics that are focal point in the book, bipolar disorder and suicide were completely glossed over.  Those are heavy issues that could have been explored a lot more but since it wasn’t, it left me feeling somewhat unfulfilled.  I want to understand why a character is the way she is and not left on my own to figure it out.  That’s the only concern/issue I had with this book but the rest is fantastic; it’s sexy, great writing, a touch of angst and I was able to connect with the characters!!

“I love you, Ella May and nothing will ever change that. You can push me away -run away – and I will still love you.”

My final two cents:  I want my very own Micha and I’m totally looking forward to the follow-up book, The Forever of Ella and Micha.
